Posebnost zadnje Ibsenove drame je v tem, da se v celoti odvija v eksterierju. V prvem dejanju je prizorišče park obmorskega zdravilišča s pogledom na morje, drama se nadaljuje na gorskem travniku čez katerega teče potok in sklene v visokogorju. Z vsakim dejanjem se tako prostor širi in dviguje prav do meje človeške zmožnosti. V zgodbi se Ibsen odmika od realizma in se skozi simbolne podobe previdno približuje transcendentnemu. V prepletu simbolike in transcendence se izrisuje Ibsenova temna slutnja o prihodnosti človeštva – slutnja o prelomnih dogodkih, ki bodo s silovitim udarcem ustvarili razpoko v zgodbi človeštva.
A distinctive feature of Ibsen’s final play is that it takes place entirely outdoors. The first act is set in the grounds of a seaside spa overlooking the sea; the drama continues on a mountain meadow and concludes in the high mountains. With each act, the dramatic space expands and ascends, reaching the very limits of human capability. Ibsen moves away from realism, cautiously approaching the transcendent through symbolic imagery. Through this interplay of symbolism and transcendence, his dark premonition of humanity’s future takes shape—a foreboding of momentous events that will violently rupture the course of human history.
