MOJSTER
THE MASTER
REŽISER / DIRECTOR: JAŠA KOCELI
MGL / LJUBLJANA CITY THEATRE
2022

The performance takes place on the rooftop terrace of Jože Plečnik Gymnasium in the centre of Ljubljana. The rooftop of the building designed by Plečnik is largely unknown to the public. The building lies on the boundary between the historic city centre and Ljubljana’s more recent urban expansion. From the terrace, one has a clear view of Ljubljana Castle, the Parliament building and Republic Square, among other landmarks. It is an excellent vantage point from which to observe and comment on Ljubljana - a city on which Plečnik left such a profound mark.
The text of Mojster is based on the extensive correspondence of architect Jože Plečnik. Through his letters, the performance explores his reflections on architecture, art, religion, philosophy, politics, friendship, and love.Just as individual thoughts and ideas in Plečnik’s correspondence are brought together to form a new and coherent whole, the performance space is continuously transformed and reconfigured. Schematized geometric objects, conceived as material manifestations of thought, are assembled and rearranged into architectural shapes. In this way, performance space becomes an extension of Plečnik’s thinking—a dynamic system in which thought is translated into form, words into space, and ideas into architecture.
